“I have been a volunteer Teacher at Turning Point Academy for over three years now. The time has simply flown by and the progress made by our members has been phenomenal. I have found this work both rewarding and exciting by working alongside a dedicated team who ensure the smooth running of the organisation. This is coupled with the wonderful mix of ladies who are our treasured members. As a teacher, I have had the pleasure of teaching women from different parts of the world as well as many locals. There is never a dull moment and I feel I get back as much as I give, perhaps more! The visiting speakers, all specialists in their own field, further enhance the teaching experience and I am as eager as our students to listen to the lectures.
As part of my commitment to this work, I attend the termly teacher training sessions which provide a useful evaluation of the work and its results. This is a great opportunity to make suggestions as to how we can further improve the service we provide and assess feedback from our students. I have been briefed on health and safety on the premises and also been invited to do a first aid course.
Our students follow a structured course for learning Qur’anic Arabic, which is taught using excellent resources including a set of books specially chosen for its simplicity. Other resources are freely available and facilitate the whole experience for both students and teachers.
My personal experience at Turning Point has been very good. I am treated with the utmost respect from both staff and students. I am invited to participate in various events such as the Ramadan programme where we organise Iftaar dinners for our newly converted members. I hope to be given the opportunity to continue with this charitable work for a long time to come.”

“Teaching at Turning Point Academy is the best thing I’ve done yet as a Muslim. The atmosphere is very much one of support, without judging or criticising. I am thrilled to be helping sisters off to a sound start as new Muslims – having been there myself 17 years ago, I understand what it’s like. It is so satisfying to be able to use both my knowledge and my experiences to connect with someone and help them find their own way. Meeting sisters from so many walks of life is a real blessing – I think it’s vital that we all feel connected together. It’s a real challenge though, as I continually have to adapt my teaching style. “Alhamdulillah, there is only one word to describe the services provided by Turning Point Academy to new Muslim sisters: Amazing! Why Amazing?
Turning Point Academy’s sessions provide support in learning how to pray and learning the Arabic alphabet leading on to reciting the Qur’an. It also provides a base for new sisters to turn to for any kind of help they require. MashaAllah the manager Amina is very resourceful and is able to direct sisters to the right people and organisations.
The sessions are professionally organised, with learning hour, valuable short talks, refreshments/dinner, social time and also crèche facility for the daytime sessions. The atmosphere is buzzing and very friendly. Everyone is very keen to make progress in their new way of life! It gives a feeling of a ‘sense of belonging’ to a new found family. It is also a platform for sisters to meet and make new friends. Alhamdulillah, I believe that these sessions are truly blessed where Sakeenah (Tranquility) descends, surrounded by Allah’s Mercy and His Angels and Allah will mention all of us amongst those who are with Him.
